2007 Far Western District Spring Convention Dedicated to Bill LeggThe Far Western District Board of Directors and the District membership are proud to dedicate the 2007 Spring District Convention to Bill Legg. In January 1954, Bill received a call from a friend who said he thought Bill would enjoy the organization to which he belonged. Today, Bill says, "That was the understatement of all time!" He went to a chapter meeting and, after hearing the music and seeing the fun, he returned the next week and asked, "Who takes the money?" As Bill also says, "Believe me, I was sold." He has been an active member of the Stockton Chapter ever since. Bill feels very fortunate to have a wonderful wife who allows him to pursue this great hobby of barbershopping. He and his wife, Dorothy, went to high school together and were married in September 1945. They have three children-two girls and a boy-who have blessed them with nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Life certainly goes on! Bill served in the United States Marine Corps from January 1942 until October 1945, spent 30 months in the South Pacific and was in three military campaigns. Bill and Dorothy moved from Nashville, Tennessee, in 1946 and settled in Stockton. He worked for the City of Stockton Engineering Department for 33 years and retired in 1982. He has served as Chapter President at least three times and has held all the other administrative positions except Secretary and Treasurer. He also has been Show Chairman more times than he can remember and served as the chairman of contests on at least three occasions. Bill has been the Youth in Harmony Coordinator for the Stockton chapter from the beginning and coached a high school quartet, The Gold Rush Boys, prior to the High School quartet contests. He also coached Perfect Harmony, who won the High School Quartet Championship! Bill served as Musical Director three separate times, taking the chorus to Reno once in competition. He always says that when a new director shows up, then he sits down and sings. Bill is a quartet man and has sung with The Four Specs, The Shaving Muggs, The Tattered Remnants, and The Dispensers of Musical Libations. The Four Specs had a six year run and appeared on many NorCal Shows. Bill appeared in twenty annual productions of Showcase, a show spotlighting performers sixty years of age or older. During the past fifteen years he has sung with Grider and Legg-a guy, a gal, and a guitar singing for shut-ins and hospitals. He is also a "53/52 Man"; that is, he is a 53 year member of the Society and has 52 "Man-Of-Note" pins-an impressive record indeed! Bill is truly the kind of guy who represents the heart and soul of barbershopping. Don't we all wish that we had more men like this in our own chapter? The Far Western District is fortunate to have him among its members and it is our pleasure to honor Bill Legg at the 2007 FWD Spring Convention in Reno! In addition to the items covered in the convention program, Bill has received a Bachelor of Harmony Award. He scored 499 points which places him in the top 30 percent of those men that have received the award. He served in the Marines in World War two and was in three campaigns. He still says he is lucky to be one of the survivors. The commemorative plaque inscription reads
