So You Wanna Be A Judge? Class at Denver

Do you pick winners when you attend a barbershop contest? Who doesn't? Do you usually get it right? Have you sat in an evaluation session with your quartet or chorus and thought, "Hey, I could do what this judge is doing."? I'm sure many of you have. Are you going to the International convention in Denver this summer? If so, then you're in luck!

On Tuesday afternoon, July 3, at 2:00 pm in the Denver Room of the headquarters Adam's Mark hotel, there will be a 50 minute session called "So You Wanna Be A Judge". There are no requirements to attend other than curiosity about what it takes to be a Barbershop Harmony Society contest judge.

This informative session will be chaired by Dwain Chambers, past category specialist in the Contest Administrator category. Also presenting will be Steve Jamison, past Category Specialist in the Music category, Bobby Gray, Board of Review member of the Presentation category, and Jim Emery, Board of Review member of the Singing category.

The session will describe the specifics of what gets judged in each scoring category, how contest administrators run contests, the requirements to be a judge, and the candidacy process whereby you can become a certified judge.

The society's contest and judging system is constantly looking for good new judge candidates to enhance our corps of judges. And you may have just the skills and experience we need. So stop by Tuesday afternoon in Denver and satisfy your curiosity.

Could you be a judge? You won't know until you check it out!

DEADLINE Looms: Harmony College West August 24-25

The deadline for a HCW 2007 registration to reach us is July 27, so now is a great time to sign up.

If you haven't attended HCW for a couple years, take a look at HCW is Evolving to learn how much has changed.

Power Play, the 2003 International Gold Medal Quartet, is our headliner this year. They'll be coaching our quartets and will be on the Saturday night show. And Late Show will be joining us too. Saturday afternoon three of the Late Show members will be teaching classes on how to be great singers and the fourth member just might be your quartet coach.

The POD coaching system used last year at Redlands was extremely popular and we'll use it again this year. In the POD system coaches in four different disciplines each meet with you twice. We are planning on more quartets to participate this year, but we do have a limit and you're going to need to sign up soon before all the slots are gone.

Our new program for individuals has lots of classes to choose from. This year we'll repeat the popular classes such as Vocal Production, Arranging, Sight Reading, and Woodshedding, plus many new ones. We'll also add the class that has been missing from COTS for years for the chapter Program Vice President. Come learn how to put on an exciting chapter meeting, even if you aren't currently the Program VP. We'll have some singing for fun classes too starting at 3pm on Friday for the early arrivals.

Go to the HCW Home page for more detailed information and links to class descriptions and online registration. This new online registration system is automated and fills in much of the forms for you.

If you have questions and/or suggestions, send Registrar Derick Sturke an email at hcw-reg@pacbell.net.

Youth Harmony Camp Sept. 21-23

Youth Harmony Camp will be held September 21-23 this year. This is the place to get teen boys totally excited about singing in the barbershop style. Visit our camp website at 2007 Youth Harmony Camp where you will find all the information including a flyer for posting. How about sponsoring a quartet from your local high school?

Place an ad in the Fall Contest booklet

The Phoenix chapter is now soliciting ads for the FWD Fall Convention program booklet. Our goal is to produce a booklet that will be used not just as a convention guide of events, but kept as a souvenir of your Phoenix convention experience.

We are planning to print a 20-page, full-color, 8.5” x 5.5” booklet on 100lb gloss book stock. For those of you who are not printing aficionados, the quality would be that of a theatre Playbill, but in full color.

Ad rates are as follows: quarter page - $100, half page - $200, and a full page at $400. The back cover and inside back cover are available for $500 (full page only).

We intend for the advertising revenue to cover all printing costs and encourage all district quartets and business owners to run an ad in the book. In most cases, we can create an ad from your business card if you have no other artwork.

An advertising order form as well as sample ads from our recent show program are available at the links below. Support your District…space is limited, so check it out now.

If you have any questions, contact Dave Melville, webmaster@spiritofphoenix.org or myself. Contact info is also on the order form. Deadline for all advertising is August 25th.

Thank you,

Allen Baum
