Harmony College West 2007, August 24-25

Next August is a lot closer than you think. If you don't mark your calendar now you may miss out. Over the last two years we have made huge changes in Harmony College West and its all due to your input. There are way too many changes to list here, so go to HCW is Evolving to learn how much has changed.

This year our Headliner Quartet is Power Play, the 2003 International Gold Medal Quartet. They'll be coaching our quartets and will be on the Saturday night show. And Late Show will be joining us too. Saturday afternoon three of the Late Show members will be teaching classes on how to be great singers and the fourth member just might be your quartet coach.

The POD coaching system used last year at Redlands was extremely popular and we'll use it again this year. Did you read Jerry Fairchild's article in the Winter Westunes and see the many enthusiastic comments about POD coaching? You can read it online at Westunes, Winter 2006. We are planning on more quartets to participate this year, but we do have a limit and you're going to need to sign up soon before all the slots are gone.

Our new program for individuals that has lots of classes to choose from was well received too. This year we'll repeat the popular classes such as Vocal Production, Arranging, Sight Reading, and Woodshedding. We'll also add the class that has been missing from COTS for years for the chapter Program Vice President. Come learn how to put on an exciting chapter meeting, even if you aren't currently the Program VP. We'll have some singing for fun classes too.

The HCW 2007 website is now open for registrations. See the link on the FWD Home page.

If you have questions and/or suggestions, send Registrar Derick Sturke an email at fwsturke@pacbell.net.

Youth In Harmony

Youth Harmony Camp will be held September 21-23 this year. This is the place to get teen boys totally excited about singing in the barbershop style. Visit our camp website at 2007 Youth Harmony Camp where you will find all the information including a flyer for posting. How about sponsoring a quartet from your local high school?

Our annual High School Quartet Contest will be getting a new traveling trophy which will be named in honor of Lloyd Steinkamp. If you would like to help fund this project, please send an email to Deane Scoville, Far Western District Awards Chairman.

Our Youth In Harmony website has been completely redesigned. There is a new section on chapter activities where you can see how others are getting involved.

Fall Convention Classes

The fall classes are still being defined. We do know the special events will start on Thursday evening with a Jumpstart Quartet Contest. Just show up, find three others, practice your song, choose a fun name, and compete. The top three quartets get special medals to wear for the weekend.

There will also be multiple classes on Friday to choose from, so plan to be there. There is no charge for the classes and ladies are welcome too.

District Sunshine Chairman

George McCay has been Sunshine Chairman for the Far Western District for many years and has done an outstanding job. Unfortunately, George feels it is time for him to step aside. We thank him for his service and wish him well.

I am very pleased to report one of the hardest working and sincere members of the FWD has agreed to take on the responsibilities of this most important post. Jim Holder, recipient of the FWD Chapter Counselor of the Year Award, will be our Sunshine Chairman. Please let Jim know how he can help.

New and Improved COTS

Chapter officers can look forward to a completely new training program this year. Our district will be providing our own training and the classes will be more focused on what you really need to do your jobs. Bob Lally is the chairman of the task force which will be meeting as part of the summer board meeting events in early June. Chuck Hunter, Sr., is the COTS Administrator for 2007.

Attention Chapter Secretaries

Members of your chapter without E-mail will not receive this information and we ask you to print this and share it with them.
