Well here's your chance to enter your first quartet contest in a smaller and more inviting venue. In fact, its kinda like performing on your chapter show. If you are in SoCal East/West or Arizona, you have a contest opportunity on January 20 in Orange, Ca. Check it all out at SoCal/Ariz Novice Contest and then get signed up. Or show up for a fun evening as part of the enthusiastic audience. For you NorCal/NorNev types put March 4 on your calendar, rustle up three others and start practicing. You'll need to be in Walnut Creek, CA, mid-day for your contest. You can sign up online right now at NorCal/NorNev Novice Contest Registration. Happy, enthusiastic, upbeat audience members are very welcome too. ========== Report your chapter Barbershopper Of The YearEach year many of our chapters recognize a member for his outstanding efforts and accomplishments of the past year, or many years. ========== Singing Valentines stories wantedValentines Day is soon upon us and every year there are tremendous heart warming stories that result. If you deliver Singing Valentines this year and have a special story to tell, please email your story to the Far Western District Webmaster. ========== Spring District/NCENN convention at Sparks, NV, March ?5-18The Far Western District Spring Prelims promise to be another exciting event where it is likely that six or more of our quartets will qualify for International. It is also the NorCal East/NorNevada division contest so you'll have lots of friends on stage to cheer on. But wait, it's also the High School Quartet Contest on Saturday afternoon, a "how can you miss that" event. There is no way to predict what these kids will come up with. And its a convention too with lots of classes on Friday afternoon. Be sure to get your registration in before the prices go up on February 15. Go to Convention Registration to get registered for the convention and hotel. If your chapter or quartet will be competing, go to BHS Members Only, log in, then scroll down to the C&J section to find the contest registration link. ========== High School Quartet Contest March 17The contest will be held Saturday, March 17, as part of the District Spring Convention at Sparks, NV. You can help make the High School Contest extra exciting by getting a quartet from your local high school into the contest. Go to the High School Quartet Contest webpage for complete information. There you will find a colorful flyer that you can print and deliver to the schools in your area. ========== Spring Convention ClassesIf you attended the Fall Convention in San Jose last October, you have a huge clue on the great selection of classes on Friday afternoon where we logged 283 student hours. On Friday afternoon, March 16, at Sparks, NV, we'll again have a great lineup of interesting classes. And the classes are included as part of your convention registration. That means that spouses and teens are welcome too. We'll have classes where you can sing your heart out, or learn how to sing better, and maybe some classes on other kinds of topics too. Did you get in on the class on What The Judges Are Looking For in San Jose? It was standing room only. Don't miss out on the "convention" at Sparks. ========== East meets West in SoCalSoCal East and SoCal West will have a combined division convention and contest on May 5th. It will be hosted by the San Fernando Valley Chapter at a location to be announced soon. ========== District Communication Channels Survey ResultsThis past November we asked you to tell us how we can serve you better with Far Western District communications and 721 of you responded. It is clearly a topic of interest to you and we have already started making changes. There were many suggestions about this online newsletter and much has been incorporated already. We'll tell you about changes to the other communication vehicles at a later time. One big change is you now may specify your communication preferences. See the next article. For an overview of the survey results, go to FWD Communications Survey Summary ========== Choose your district communicationsIn the Communications Survey you made it clear that you wanted the option of choosing how you hear from the district. You may now go to FWD Communications Options where you will learn about all our communication channels and you'll have several options open to you. If you do nothing you will receive a printed copy of Westunes and this emailed newsletter. ========== Harmony College West 2007, August 24-25Next August seems a long ways away, but if you don't mark your calendar now you may miss out. Over the last two years we have made huge changes in Harmony College West and its all due to your input. There are way too many changes to list here, so go to HCW is Evolving to learn how much has changed. This year our Headliner Quartet is Power Play, the 2003 International Gold Medal Quartet. They'll be coaching our quartets and will be on the Saturday night show. And Late Show will be joining us too. The POD coaching system used last year at Redlands was extremely popular and we'll use it again this year. Did you read Jerry Fairchild's article in the last Westunes and see the many enthusiastic comments about POD coaching? You can read it online at Westunes, Winter 2006. We are planning on more quartets to participate this year, but we do have a limit and you're going to need to sign up this spring before all the slots are gone. Our new program for individuals that has lots of classes to choose from was well received too. This year we'll repeat the popular classes such as Vocal Production, Arranging, Sight Reading, and Woodshedding. We'll also add the class that has been missing from COTS for years for the chapter Program Vice President. Come learn how to put on an exciting chapter meeting, even if you aren't currently the Program VP. We'll have some singing for fun classes too. How about a class on how to sing your particular part better? We're working on it. If you have questions and/or suggestions, send Derick Sturke an email at fwsturke@pacbell.net. ========== Attention Chapter PresidentsNow is the time to complete the "Financial Review" for 2005. Your Guidelines can be found in the Treasurer's Manual and Exhibits. A copy of the "Financial Review" must be sent to Frank Santarelli in Kenosha. Make sure to include your Chapter name and Number "D-XXX". Jim Sherman ========== Attention Chapter TreasurersHarmony Foundation needs to know about your charitable giving in 2006. You should be receiving a letter from them soon requesting this information. It won't be a letter asking for donations. Your report back to Harmony Foundation will help show what a giving district we have. ========== Attention Chapter SecretariesMembers of your chapter without E-mail will not receive this information and we ask you to print this and share it with them. ========== |
